BK residents rally for more green space
Some Brooklyn residents gathered at City Hall Thursday to demand that the mayor make good on a promise for more park land in the borough.
Residents say they want more flowers and less towers on the waterfront. They say a promise was made to them a decade ago for 28 acres of green space as part of the Greenpoint-Williamsburg rezoning.
The green space that residents are talking about is the Bushwick Inlet Park. The city is already developing park space there.
However, CitiStorage, a warehouse on the waterfront, went up in flames in January. Now residents are wondering about the park's future because CitiStorage is zoned as park land and it sits next to the park, but it isn't owned by the city.
Residents say their biggest fear is that the city will rezone the CitiStorage site, paving the way for the owner to sell it to a condo developer.
News 12 reached out to the city and they say they are moving forward with plans to bring 28 new acres of green space to the area. However, they say they are not sure what will happen to the CitiStorage site. They say they don't have the money to buy it at the moment.
Residents say the community should be given a chance to buy the bonds to support the purchase. That's something voters would have to decide at City Hall.
