Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Wednesday at a Manhattan police precinct that crime is down across the city.

Bloomberg said the 2007 figures show the murder rate is down nearly 25 percent since 2001. There were 600 homicides this year, compared to 2,000 in 1990. The felony crime rate is also down. Domestic violence homicides decreased by nearly half since 2002.

City figures also show crime is at an all-time low on public transportation.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly praised Operation Impact for the changes. The program floods crime-plagued areas with new academy graduates. Kelly said the goal is to have cops interact with the community and deter crime with their presence.

The findings come after a string of recent shootings. Kelly and Bloomberg promised to continue to work to cut crime rates.
