Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark and the NYPD are joining together for a gun buyback event in Wakefield today.
Residents can hand over guns at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on 222nd Street in exchange for prepaid debit cards.
The initiative comes as gun violence in the borough is seeing a major increase. The number of victims and shootings has doubled in the 47th Precinct from this time last year.
Community members are urged to turn in their guns without fear of any legal consequences.
Participants will receive a $200 card for turning in a handgun and assault rifle, and a $25 card for a rifle, shotgun or air gun.
"With so many shootings happening, it's important to do all we can to take guns of Bronx streets," Clark says. "We hope to get as many guns as possible, but even one could save a life."
The event runs today through 4 p.m.
