The memory of a Bronx man will be honored as a permanent fixture in his hometown nearly two years after his death.

Kalief Browder spent three years on Rikers Island for stealing a backpack. Most of that time was spent in solitary confinement, despite being a minor, before the charges against him were dropped. After his release, he took his own life.

Browder's story led politicians to take another look at the justice system.  Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed to phase out Rikers, and former President Barack Obama cited his story as a factor in his decision to end solitary confinement for minors in federal prison. 

The corner of East 181st Street and Prospect Avenue will now be known as Kalief Browder Way.  This particular intersection was chosen because it is where Browder grew up.
