District 8 Schools in the Bronx are on a mission to make sure every student has a pencil.
"The basic supply of a classroom is a pencil,” says District 8 Superintendent Dr. Erika Tobia. “So when you have a little pencil or you don't have one because you forgot it or for whatever reason you don't have it, it's a block."
The Twitter-driven pencil campaign with the hashtag, #giveakidapencil, aims to collect one million pencils in an effort to ensure no kid in the district ever runs into that roadblock.
"It's important for us as a community to come together to give our kids everything they need," Dr. Tobia says.
Community members, teachers and even students are all chipping in to donate piles of pencils.
On Feb. 3, the pencils will be dropped off at each of the 37 schools in the district for use in the classroom or outside, whenever the kids need them.
If they reach the goal of collecting one million pencils, each kid gets more than one. In fact, they'll get around 50 each.
So far, District 8 has collected about 100,000 pencils and they'll be collecting until Feb. 2.
Residents interested in participating can drop pencils off at any District 8 school.
