A celebration of life and dedication to the community was held Friday in Al Quinones’ honor.
A street in the Bronx was renamed in honor of the community and cultural activist.
Council member Rafael Salamanca, who helped spearhead the street renaming, was joined by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and other elected officials for the celebration.
They described Quinones as a man who dedicated his life to rebuilding Playground 52 and preserving Latin culture through performing arts and music in a time when other people were turning their backs on the Bronx.
They say the park is still a staple in the community thanks to 52 People for Progress, which Quinones helped to start--a group that helps to maintain parkland in the community.
