The Brooklyn Autism Spectrum Disorder Initiative and the Shorefront Y joined forces to host their fourth annual Walk for Autism.
The walk began Sunday morning on the Coney Island boardwalk.
Organizers say the goal of the walk is to raise awareness of autism and educate parents about the free and low-cost services that are available to them.
Participant Maria McAvoy said that her daughter, who has cerebral palsy, has benefited from the programs that groups like Shorefront Y have provided.
All proceeds generated from the walk will benefit programs at participating organizations that serve children with special needs.
