Brooklyn bakers churned out hundreds of pastries Saturday in celebration of Three Kings Day, a holiday largely celebrated by Hispanic communities following Christmas.
Many celebrate Jan. 6 as the day they believe the three wise men visited baby Jesus. The holiday is often commemorated with a traditional sweetbread called “rosca de los reyes,” which translates to “the kings’ wreath.”
The bread is described as a Christmas staple that is comparable to cake and usually has candied fruit on top.
A baker from Gaby’s Bakery Shop in Brooklyn says the bread is usually made with walnut or coconut on top of vanilla cream or cream cheese and is often baked with baby figurines inside as part of the tradition.
The holiday is similar to Christmas in that family comes together in honor of their religion and the three kings bring gifts for children.
Gaby’s Bakery Shop is open until 11 p.m. for the holiday.
