A buyback initiative announced Wednesday would allow individuals who own illegal guns to anonymously leave a weapon at six Brooklyn churches and receive a $200 bank card.

During a news conference, Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and other officials were accompanied by pastors who have offered their churches as locations where guns can be dropped off.

The program will take place Saturday. People can turn in rifles, handguns and shotguns - even if they're loaded - as long as they're in a plastic or paper bag.

Each gun is worth a $200 Chase Bank card, with a limit to three per person. BB guns and air pistols are worth $20.

Kelly says the transactions will remain anonymous, and the aim is to get weapons off the streets.

A similar initiative netted nearly 600 guns in 1999 and 650 in 2000, Hynes says.

This year, city officials have $300,000 to spend on 1,500 weapons and are hoping to run out of money.
