Community members rallied Tuesday against the NYPD's policies on marijuana arrests.

The group, led by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, says Police Commissioner Bill Bratton needs to stop prosecuting low-level marijuana possession cases. They say taking this historic step will reduce racial disparities and the number of residents unfairly saddled with lifelong arrest records for carrying small amounts of the drug.

Jeffries also added that after the first quarter of 2014, numbers reveal that New York City remains the marijuana arrest capital of the country, and most of those arrests were directed toward African-Americans and Latinos. Although Mayor Bill de Blasio and Bratton disagree with the proposed reform, Jeffries is asking that they consider the change and follow in the footsteps of other elected leaders.

Jeffries gave Bratton a letter that outlines how reforming the NYPD's policy would improve life for many people throughout New York City.
