Many are being given the gift of independence and it's being given right in Brooklyn.
For decades, Brooklyn Community Services has been working to partner people with disabilities with employers looking to hire.
"These are people who want to work and BCS is just simply there to help them reach their goals,' says Kristina Reintamm, of BCS.
Jeffrey Walter got his job as a messenger thanks to Brooklyn Community Services.
Jeffrey like many clients is paired with a job coach to help them with their resume and go with them to their interview.
"I as a job coach would go to the company where they are employed, and I would provide services for them because sometimes they need areas they need help with," says BCS job coach Shelly Ann Dwarika.
The workers are proud in their new jobs roles and in their independence.
"I just love being out and about, out on the street," says Jeffery. "I can get up, get dressed, able to get to work on my own."
