Community leaders are coming together for a Flatlands park that hasn't had a makeover in decades.

Power Playground has been unappealing to Flatlands resident Ted Rungreang for several years.

"This is literally like two blocks away from my house and I just don't come here. I would much rather go all the way to Marine Park because this park hasn't changed since I've lived here, and I've lived here for 24 years of my life,” says Rungreang.

Local leaders say they recognize residents’ concerns and that and they're trying to change it.

"It's tired and it's worn, and it needs to be redone,” says Brooklyn Councilmember Alan N. Maisel.

Councilmember Maisel has secured $2.5 million for the first phase of the project with some help from the borough president as well. However, he says that only scratches the surface when it comes to renovating the park.

"Ultimately this park is going to cost $7 million," says Maisel.

The park currently doesn't have a bathroom, but Maisel says adding one could attract more parkgoers.

"People have seen people using the back as a bathroom. Which is pretty disgusting. We would like to put a stop to that,” says Maisel.

Community members were invited to a meeting a few weeks ago to discuss potential ideas.

"We heard about pickle ball, we heard about a track, we heard about adult softball,” says Paul Curiale, of the Mill Basin Civic Association.

Maisel says he will work to secure more funding over the next two years. The Parks Department estimates it could take a year to finish up design plans.
