After the mayor's office declared a public health emergency in specific areas of Williamsburg Tuesday, medical professionals are stepping in to stop the spread of the measles.

Doctors are not only vaccinating residents against the measles, but testing them to see if they are immune or need a booster shot.

Medical professionals say a titer test measures the existence and level of antibodies to disease in the blood. Within a day or two of the test, patients can find out whether or not they need a booster shot.

Parcare Chief Executive Officer Gary Schlesinger says people have been flocking in to get tested. Demand for the MMR vaccination from the medical center has doubled.

"The amount of vaccines that we ordered is tremendous," he says.
