A Brooklyn man has filed a notice of claim with the intent of suing the NYPD for an incident during the start of the protests following the killing of George Floyd.
Aaron Ross says he's waiting for his first hearing in December. The incident, which happened on May 30, was caught on video that went viral on social media.
A police car is seen in the video, with protesters surrounding it and throwing debris and items such as traffic cones at it. Then, another police SUV pulls up to them with lights and sirens blaring and pushes through the crowd.
The first police car then accelerated forward into the barricade and the people standing behind it.
Ross, from Sheepshead Bay, says he was standing behind the barricade and was hit in the side.
The following day, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea posted a series of tweets in support of the NYPD, saying the officers were facing danger, disrespect and denigration.
Shea says what was seen was not about peaceful protest, but instead, a "mob bent solely on taking advantage of a moment in American history, to co-opt the cause of equality that we all must uphold, to intentionally inflict chaos, mayhem, and injury just for the sake of doing so."
A spokesperson from the NYPD told News 12 in a statement, "We will review the lawsuit if and when we are served."
