Brooklyn man starts online petition asking MTA to correctly spell Verrazano Bridge
A Brooklyn man has started an online petition to fix the spelling of the Verrazano Bridge.
Robert Nash, whose online petition has gotten about 200 signatures, says Giovanni da Verrazzano was an Italian explorer who discovered New York harbor in the 1520s, and the bridge was named after him -- but its name is spelled wrong.
Nash says there are actually two Zs in Verrazzano.
"I feel like it's almost a slap in the face for a particular group of people," Nash says. "The Italians."
Some residents say the spelling should have been correct from the beginning.
"How did it happen in the first place?" asks lifelong Bay Ridge resident Catherine Collins. "Someone wasn't doing their homework to begin with."
The MTA says it is not considering changing the name of the bridge due to cost and traffic issues.
However, Nash argues that the MTA found funds to re-name the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel and the Triborough Bridge to the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge.
"I believe that we can find the funds to try to get an extra Z in there for Verrazano," Nash says.
He plans to continue to collect signatures until the MTA changes the name of the bridge.
