As Mexico tries to recover from a massive earthquake that left more than 300 people dead, New York college students are trying to do their part to help them get back on their feet.
Students in the Mexican Heritage Association at Brooklyn Community College are planning a fundraiser within the coming months to not only aid Mexico, but the victims of all recent natural disasters.
Association president Nicole Rojas shared two pictures of the damage to her family's home in Rojas, just two hours northwest of Mexico City.
"I'm glad that everyone is fine," says Rojas. "They are receiving a little bit of help, hopefully more help comes to rebuild their homes."
Ivan Gonzalez, member of the Mexican Heritage Association, says the magnitude of the disaster truly hit when pictures of his mother's village in Puebla showed demolished roads and destroyed homes.
"It's a shocking sign of unity, through bad times everybody is working together," says Gonzalez. "People from other towns coming in to help."
