A Brooklyn native won a prestigious international award for her innovative design for an eco-friendly helmet.
Isis Shiffer is this year's winner of the international James Dyson Award, which is given to promising future design engineers. The 29-year-old Pratt graduate created the EcoHelmet.
She says she came up with the idea after noticing some who use Citibike forgo wearing helmets. The foldable helmet, which is also recyclable, is made of paper honeycomb.
Shiffer is working to get the helmet patented and certified by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, more than 800 bicyclists were killed in 2015 -- the largest number of bike fatalities since 1995.
