In a contemporary twist to an old story, imagine Joseph and Mary, pregnant with Jesus, trying to navigate life in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
That's the story of a popular play set in the borough, "Unto Us a Child is Born," now in its 16th year of production.
The play depicts a 14-year-old Virgin Mary as she deals with her faith and backlash resulting from her pregnancy. She then turns to her boyfriend Joseph for help.
Playwright Serina Young says she wanted to tell a story most people know through a modern-day lens, and show situations to which many people can relate.
Performances of "Unto Us a Child is Born" are being held at the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church through Sunday.
