Crest Hardware announced this week it is officially closing its doors.
Owner Joseph Franquinha sent out a release to local customers earlier this week notifying them of the closure. He said the store wasn't given the opportunity to renew their lease, forcing the business to close.
Customers packed the aisles as they visited the store one final time. Franquinha, visibly emotional, was overwhelmed by he love and support from the Williamsburg community.
Crest Hardware was owned and operated by Joseph C and Manny Franquinha, Joseph's father. The legacy was passed down, serving generations of families in Brooklyn.
"This is my life's work for the last 20 years, and I've proudly been able to carry this torch for my father, whose life was this before," Franquinha said.
Customers told News 12 they were shocked to hear the news. "I just wanna cry," said customer Pat.
Iconic mascots of the Brooklyn staple, Franklin the pig, and Finley the parrot, were in attendance. They will continue to live with Franquinha and his wife.

Crest Hardware is set to close their doors officially on Aug. 30.
