Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday that 950 tons of trash will now leave Brooklyn by rail rather than truck.

The move to rail is part of Bloomberg's plan to overhaul the city's trash disposal. A train carrying the trash from Waste Management's Verick Avenue transfer station will allow about 40 truck trips a day to be eliminated.

Bloomberg has said he wants to dispose of New York City's trash by train and barge, instead of trucks, as a way to cut pollution and improve traffic.

"We're finally getting a reduction in truck traffic in the neighborhood, which is what we've been striving for for 10 years," says Ray Kairys, of East Williamsburg.
