Brownsville school opens meditation room
Brownsville Academy High School is opening a Japanese-inspired meditation room to help students relax between tests and assignments.
The school says suspensions and behavioral issues were at an all-time high leading up to the move.
"If I would get angry, I would punch the wall or something," says student Daqan Holder. "Or say stuff I don't mean."
The school asked students for feedback.
"They collectively started to say, you know what would be cool, if we had a space, a room that was like a spa, a getaway," explains Ineisha Williford, the community school director.
Then the nonprofit Made in Brownsville designed the space based on a Japanese tea room, split into sections -- one for lounging, one for solitary meditation, and a larger communal space.
The meditation room opens to students next week.
