Budget cuts included in Mayor Bill de Blasio's proposed budget could result in the elimination of thousands of after-school summer programs for children.

Under the city's new plan, 31,000 slots in the programs could be slashed, including ones that offer physical activity or provide kids with summer jobs.

For some families, the cuts could mean tremendous hardship. Some parents say they might need to quit their jobs to care for their kids or shell out money they cannot afford for child care. Others say they fear their children will be out on the streets getting into trouble.

In response, the mayor's office said in a statement to News 12, "As announced in May 2015, last year's additional seats for summer programming were for only one year. We gave parents and providers a year's notice to plan ahead for this summer."

Families tell News 12 they hope the mayor reconsiders the cuts.
