A mother who was displaced by a fire in Bushwick says she is trying to rebuild - while she is living with her daughter in a shelter.
Angel Kaba lived on Wilson Avenue until early this year when her building was vacated by the city.
Kaba says there were three fires within the course of a few weeks. The third led the city Housing Preservation and Development to issue a vacate order. No tenants can move back in until the landlord corrects all repairs.
News 12 reached out to the landlord and got no response. Kaba doesn't know when or if she'll be able to get back into her apartment.
She and the other building tenants took the landlord to court. A judge ordered the landlord to pay more than $400,000 in civil penalties.
HPD set up Kaba with emergency assistance. She says she's staying at a shelter in Harlem. Her 8-year-old daughter goes to school in Brooklyn. They commute by train every school day.
Kaba moved to America more than 10 years ago to pursue her dancing dreams. She now teaches and choreographs. Since the fire, her dancing community conducted a series of fundraisers, including a GoFundMe.
"I'm hurt. I'm suffering. I'm crying every day. People in my community see it and they're like, we're going to help you angel. And I'm like come on angel. And I put on the music and start dancing," said Kaba.
