The Bronx Household of Faith Church held a service this morning at P.S. 291 in University Heights, after being previously denied from holding services there.
As of right now, it is the only church in the city that is allowed to hold Mass in a public building after a ruling by the Circuit Court of Appeals.
The church filed a lawsuit against the city's Department of Education to fight for the right to worship in public buildings. The first church to do so, 60 more churches have since followed suit.
Parishioners say that the court's ruling to only allow one church to worship in public spaces, but excludes others, is unfair. Leaders of The Bronx Household of Faith say they plan to stand by the other churches in solidarity.
A bill on the issue is expected to be up for a vote on the Assembly floor in the upcoming weeks.
