Bystanders, police officers rescue man attempting to jump off Verrazzano Bridge
Bystanders and police officers came to rescue of a man who attempted to jump off the Verrazzano Bridge Sunday.
State Trooper Joshua Kaye was the first person on the scene. He says at first he thought the car on the Verrazzano Bridge had just broken down. He then saw a 79-year-old man get out of the car and put one leg over the edge of the bridge.
Meanwhile, emergency service officers received a call around 2:30 p.m. for a jumper on the bridge, and rushed through Sunday traffic to help. They arrived to find Kaye, an off-duty officer and a good Samaritan holding onto the man.
The bystander who stopped to help says he had never been more happy to see a state trooper pull over.
"As happy as he was to see me, I was happy to see him. We wouldn't have been able to do that without each other," says Kaye.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital and is in stable condition.
