Taxi drivers rallied outside City Hall Tuesday afternoon, calling on City Council to take action amid what they call a crisis over the number of cabs on the streets.

Drivers had demands for officials that included a cap on for-hire vehicles to address the number ofthem circling around for customers in the city.

The cap would set a moratorium on any more for-hire vehicles entering the market to try and lessen competition.

They also want the regulated metered fare for yellow and green cabs to be adjusted to an industry standard.

The pleas for change came after the suicides of six cab drivers in recent months — which as News 12 has reported, some cabbies blame on competition from ride-sharing services.

Councilman Ruben Diaz Sr., who chairs the committee on for-hire vehicles, did not immediately respond to a News 12 request for comment.
