Organizers from a public charter school tried to get as many people as possible registered to vote Saturday during a family barbecue.
Kipp NYC hosted the barbecue at Kipp Academy Middle School and had volunteers, parents and family members recruit those attending to get registered.
The public charter school, which stands for "Knowledge is Power Program," says less than 10 percent of Bronx residents voted in the last mayoral election. They also say voter turnout in the Bronx is lower than any other borough.
Despite the general election happening on Nov. 6, residents must be registered by Oct. 20.
Last year, organizers targeted the graduating seniors of a Kipp NYC High School in the charter school program and got close to 200 of them to sign up.
With their registration drives coming up, organizers say they hope to receive the same positive numbers in the next few weeks.
