Some streets will be closed today in an effort to provide more space for people to walk and practice social distancing.

It is part of a four-day test in which the mayor has picked four different streets across the city to convert into pedestrian walk ways.

The closures will begin today from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and will happen every day up until Monday. If it all goes as planned, the city could see more streets temporarily closed down for the public.

The Bronx closure is along Grand Concourse between 184th Street and East Burnside Avenue. It is about a five-block radius, where people can walk through and continue to keep a safe distance from each other.

In Brooklyn the shutdown is along Bushwick Avenue from Flushing Avenue to Johnson Avenue. News 12 is told police will be stationed and patrolling the streets making sure people are following the rules. The change is being made to help New Yorkers from contracting or spreading coronavirus. 

As for parked cars along these streets. The mayor says cars can remain in place. The bus routes will continue to run on service roads and through traffic will be allowed on cross streets of these closed roads. Pick-up and drop offs will be directed to the corners of cross streets.

The two other streets included in this pilot program are in Manhattan and Queens.
