City Council members from BK introduce NYPD oversight bill
Two City Council members from Brooklyn have introduced a bill that would increase oversight of the NYPD at City Hall.
Council members Brad Lander and Jumaane Williams are the co-sponsors of the NYPD Inspector General Act. The bill calls for a mayor-appointed position to review the policies and practices within the police department.
According to the bill, the inspector general would have subpoena authority, the ability to conduct investigations and would have to make public reports twice a year.
Supporters say the bill would go a long way toward restoring integrity to the NYPD and protecting the civil liberties of all New Yorkers.
