Since the beginning of the economic crisis, City Harvest's Mobile Market program, which provides fresh produce free of charge, has been growing in popularity in the Bronx and beyond.

According to City Harvest, the number of people who depend on the program has increased 20 percent since last summer. The organization attributes this trend to skyrocketing unemployment and recession.

As a result of the growing demand, City Harvest has been scrambling to keep its shelves stocked with fruits and vegetables and extending hours of operation to give an opportunity to anyone in need to pick up produce.

City Harvest workers say most of their funds come from individual donors, many of whom are not wealthy people.
