Some seventh-graders at M.S. 443 in Park Slope have been taking dance classes four days a week with the help of the New Voices program.
The program has allowed the 33 coed students to learn all types of routines, including ballet and modern dance.
Teacher Michael Kerr is a professional dancer who always had a desire to teach others the art. He implemented the program in 2000 because he feels dance is just as important as other academic subjects.
"Learning how to be in front of other students and be expressive without feeling like they're going to be scrutinized or talked about afterwards," says Kerr.
The class wraps up the curriculum with a concert in May, celebrating 15 years of dance education.
