Councilman Justin Brannan is calling on the city to install street lights at a Bay Ridge intersection following a recent attempted rape in the area.
Police say a man was seen on surveillance video attempting to rape a woman near Battery Avenue and 86th Street. The incident took place in the early morning of Aug. 31 and now residents are sharing their concerns, calling the area too dark.
One woman says she now fears walking in the area at night after a man followed her daughter home. The Bay Ridge street is located between two empty properties with little light.
Councilman Brannan says something needs to be done.
"It shouldn't take an incident like this to get attention but unfortunately sometimes it does, but now getting more lighting, getting some more attention to this area will hopefully make sure that something like this doesn't happen again," said Brannan.
The DOT says they conducted a lighting survey at the location.
Following the inspection, they said they determined that there is a need for additional street lighting. The DOT said it will install five new streetlights on 86th street between Dahlgren Place and Seventh Avenue.
The NYPD has placed signs around the neighborhood offering a reward for anyone with information about the suspect that leads to an arrest
