More than a million families across New York are waking up today to a major cut to food stamps benefits.
After nearly three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government is ending some emergency payments for low-income families on the supplemental nutrition assistance program also known as SNAP.
The extra money was always intended to be temporary to help families out during the pandemic. With grocery prices still high however, many families have said this is going to be tough on them.
A study from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says that the average household will lose almost $100 a month for groceries. The city does have some options to help with public schools offering hot breakfast and lunch and food banks racing to fill in the gaps.
Despite this, some organizations are worried that families are still going to be hit hard.
Those on the regular SNAP program will continue to receive those benefits.
