A public meeting on a controversial redevelopment project at the Bedford-Union Armory grew loud and emotional Wednesday evening as critics called on officials who already oppose the plan to fight it harder.
Elected leaders stepped up their opposition in May, arguing that it prioritizes gentrifying luxury condominiums rather than low-income housing.
Residents who strongly oppose the project invited Mayor Bill de Blasio to the meeting, but he did not attend. His office tells News 12 that the mayor had previously agreed to attend another town hall meeting in Harlem with Councilman Bill Perkins.
"Those seeking to cast doubt on the Mayor's commitment to making the Bedford-Union Armory the best project it can be simply aren't paying attention," a spokesperson said.
But the Crown Heights residents who oppose the project say the mayor's absence was a sign of disrespect.
"I'm the only elected official here, because everyone is scared to say something adversely affecting the mayor," state Sen. Jesse Hamilton (D-Brooklyn) told the gathering. "But I represent my community. My family has been here for over 60 years, and I'm gonna fight for what is right."
