Crown Heights shooting victim laid to rest
A woman who police believe was the victim of a stray bullet was laid to rest on Friday.
Friends and family gathered at St. Theresa?s Church to mourn Carol Simon, who was just 35 years old when she died.
Simon left behind a 9-year-old son, Kieron McEwen. Police believe Simon left her son in the car Saturday with the intent of getting something from her home. However, she was struck in the stomach by a bullet on her way and was later pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.
Police believe the bullet was part of a gunfight between two men. They are looking for Darius Dubarry, 27, the man they believe fired the fatal shot.
Simon?s family members say they can?t believe such a loving mother could be killed. They say they can?t grasp it all. One woman screamed and cried outside the church when Simon?s coffin was taken out of the hearse.
The community says crime in Crown Heights has been on the rise. They believe the violence is fueled by angry young people who have easy access to guns. Residents say a change in the trend needs to start at home, with better father figures and more parental supervision.
A fund for Kieron McEwan has been established by relatives. Donations can be sent to Washington Mutual Bank, located at 391 Eastern Parkway. Checks should be made payable to Alwin Simon, for the benefit of Kieron McEwen. Those who wish to donate can contact Clarence McEwen (917) 402-2184, Alwin Simon (917) 518-7135 and Shawn Fortune (347) 432-8235 with questions.
Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting or the suspect to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
