A singer from Crown Heights is getting national attention for competing on NBC's talent show "The Voice."
India Carney's soulful version of "New York State of Mind" got her a standing ovation and a top spot on the show. The 21-year-old picked the song as a nod to her hometown.
The Brooklyn native says it has been the journey of a lifetime, and she continues to grow each episode.
"They've really pushed me a lot and I really appreciate that because generally you won't know what you are capable of until you are pushed," said Carney.
Carney actually tried out for the show twice before. After being courted this time by all four judges, she is now on Christina Aguilera's team. Carney says she has admired Aguilera for years and is excited for the opportunity to be coached by her.
Her family says that from a young age, they could tell music would play a big role in Carney's life. She sang in plays at school and around the borough.
Carney's family says they hope that she stays on the show until the end and receives a recording contract.
