Gov. Andrew Cuomo organized a rally in New Hyde Park Tuesday where he called for a strengthening of New York state's pro-choice laws.

The rally was held one day after President Donald Trump announced his conservative Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

“Make no mistake, this is not a game. They are on a track to overturn Roe v. Wade,” said the governor.

Gov. Cuomo is asking lawmakers to enact the federal ruling into state law. He says current state law is “not as strong as Roe v. Wade.”

The Republican-led state Senate, which has opposed changing state law, issued a statement reading: "The truth is the Reproductive Health Act as written would allow non-medical doctors to perform abortions and would water down protections for pregnant victims of domestic violence."

Planned Parenthood calls that misleading, and says only licensed medical professionals would be allowed to perform abortions.

The state legislative session is over for the year, but Gov. Cuomo wants the Senate to reconvene to pass the law.
