Actress Cynthia Nixon held her first campaign event in Brownsville Tuesday, 24 hours after she announced running for governor of New York.
The "Sex in the City" star spoke at a community center in Brownsville to share her grassroots message of bringing democracy back to the people.
She was met with a warm welcome from supporters as she gave her first campaign speech.
"I am not just an actor or a mother or a wife, I'm also a New Yorker and I'm running for governor because I love this state," she addressed supporters.
Nixon, 51, who has never held a position in public office is taking on incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
She says she will take on Cuomo's policies that only favor the rich and that she will fix the troubled subway system.
“Since taking office, his government has given massive tax breaks to corporations and the super-rich and he has decimated our infrastructure and starved its cities and rural areas of the most basic services,” said Nixon.
Nixon promised to fight corporate greed and is refusing any corporate donations to her campaign.
“We want our state back. We want our government working and we are tired of corruption and dysfunction in Albany,” she said.
If elected, Nixon would be the first female governor of New York state.
