Democrats defeat GOP candidates in local senate, congressional districts
The midterm elections are over, and there are some big local changes coming out of the election.
In Bay Ridge, there was a closely watched race -- the Senate with two candidates hoping to take the win. While the results may be in, one candidate isn’t quite ready to hand over the reins.
Results showed that Democratic Candidate Andrew Gounardes got 51 percent of the votes, but Republican candidate Marty Golden did not concede.
"Thank you, every single person, in this room, because tonight's victory is not my victory. It's your victory. It's our victory. It's our communities’ victory. And none of this and none of this would have been possible without every single person in this room,” said Gounardes.
Army veteran Max Rose took the win in the 11th Congressional District, beating the city's only Republican Congressman Dan Donovan.
Donovan said Tuesday night that it's been an amazing ride for his family, that the last 22 years have been an honor and a privilege.
"They're tired of the divisiveness. Donald Trump is the president right now. We'll litigate that in 2020. We have to get to work. We have to get to work on infrastructure. On the opioid epidemic. On gun violence on the affordability crisis in this community and others like it. That's what people are hungry for and that's what they deserve,” said Rose.
