The Department of Transportation is proposing some safety improvements along Bronxdale Avenue following a study into injuries on the road.

A department study found that there were 179 injuries along Bronxdale Avenue from 2014 to 2018. The main contributors to the injuries were speeding vehicles, poorly defined lanes, pedestrian access issues and a lack of bicycle-friendly connections. 

The proposal includes parking-protected bike lanes, which means adding a bike lane right next to the sidewalk and then having a separate lane for parking, that way cyclists will be protected from the main traffic. 

Other proposed changes include adding left-turn bays, shortening crossing distances with painted pedestrian islands and narrowing roadways to discourage speeding.

Although some members of the community are on board with the changes, others are turning the proposal down.  Approximately 90% of members on Community Board 11 voted against the proposal. 

The board is concerned that the added bike lanes will worsen the road parking conditions.
