Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea is officially succeeding James O'Neill as commissioner of the New York Police Department.

O'Neill is retiring after 37 years with the department. He spent the last three years as the NYPD's 43rd commissioner.

The 62-year-old won't be out of work for long. On Monday he starts his new role as global security chief at Visa.

Shea has been with the NYPD for nearly three decades.

The 50-year-old is a Queens native and says he plans to expand on some of the programs already working for the department.

As commissioner, Shea will have to contend with looming bail reforms, pressure to reduce arrests and dissent among some of the department's 36,000 officers.
