The Kings County District Attorney's Office has created a hate crimes unit to combat a rise in racially and religiously motivated attacks across the borough.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the unit will have five prosecutors led by Marc Fliedner, who is District Attorney Ken Thompson's civil rights bureau chief.
NYPD statistics show that Brooklyn had 95 reported hate crimes between Jan. 1 and Sept. 14, which is a 30-percent rise compared to the same period last year.
Brooklyn also had the highest number of reported hate crimes in New York City from 2008 to 2012, followed by Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and then Staten Island.
