The Panel for Educational Policy has made the final decision to phase out five failing schools in The Bronx.

The panel voted on the future of struggling schools throughout the city during a meeting in Fort Greene where hundreds of angry parents, teachers and students turned out to protest. They also criticized the Department of Education (DOE) and Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The schools had all been identified as having consistently poor attendance and performance records. Jane Addams High School is among them, which parents say is a major concern because vocational opportunities are limited.

Other schools that will be shuttered are the Gateway School for Environmental Research and Technology, Samuel Gompers, Grace Dodge and Aspire Middle School. The Academy for Scholarship and Entrepreneurship will stay open, but will have its middle school grades phased out.
