The Department of Transportation is working to improve safety on the city’s roads through the use of new technology.  

The DOT is running a pilot program on several city streets, installing small sensors above the streets that will monitor traffic along the road and send data back to the city agency.  

The department plans to use the information to get a better idea of how the streets are being used, helping plan out future redesigns in certain neighborhoods and getting information on traffic crashes.  

According to VisionZero’s latest data, as of March 1, a total of 30 New Yorkers have lost their lives in traffic crashes, with over 6,900 suffering injuries.  

“One traffic fatality is too many,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “New York City DOT is exploring new and innovative ways to use technology to prevent the next tragedy from happening.  

So far, 12 sensors have been installed citywide, and the department hopes to use these sensors to monitor speed, traffic, road use and more.
