The Red Cross is assisting displaced families after a four-alarm fire that remains under investigation.
Authorities say the fire started around 1 a.m. Friday as tenants slept at 161 Hendrix St. in East New York.
"All I heard was a loud boom," said Amanda Rosario, who thought she had heard a car accident. "The walls shook."
Tenants escaped -- many with just the clothes on their backs -- as smoke billowed and flames swept through the building, shooting out of windows and from the roof.
At least seven people were injured, including two children, two NYPD officers and a firefighter.
Service was suspended temporarily on the J train as firefighters used the elevated subway tracks to tackle the blaze.
The Department of Buildings says the building must be demolished because it is too unstable, but it is unclear when the demolition will take place.
The cause of the fire is undetermined.
