Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, known as El Chapo, was back in Brooklyn Tuesday for court hearings.

During the transport of El Chapo from Manhattan to Brooklyn, the entire Brooklyn Bridge was temporarily shut down. Police blocked off Tillary Street as the motorcade drove through with heavily armed officers standing guard outside.

Additional security was present the entire time both inside and outside of the courtroom.

El Chapo is accused of killing thousands of people while running the Sinaloa drug cartel and shipping several tons of cocaine into the U.S. Prosecutors say they believe they can prove he was also involved in a 1992 shootout at a nightclub that left six people dead.

A federal judge has granted jurors in the upcoming trial anonymity to protect them.

The judge said this was in light of the history of violence with the cartel that El Chapo allegedly ran.

The defense argued that the decision would prejudice jurors by making them think El Chapo is dangerous.

El Chapo’s attorney also requested criminal histories of the roughly 40 witnesses that prosecutors may put on the stand.

Discussions regarding formalities of the case, such as the availability of translated transcripts will come up as the expected start date of the trial nears.

El Chapo has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is expected to last 16 weeks.
