A Morris Heights staple for the city’s theater district is looking to help as much as they can during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ernest Winzer Cleaners is teaming up with the members of the theater community and is now a part of the “Broadway Relief Project.” The family-owned business dry cleans, presses, and tailors costumes and wardrobe accessories for some of the biggest shows on broadway. 

Now, by putting their machines in motion, they hope to sew and stitch much-needed surgical gowns for hospitals at the forefront of the global crisis. 

 

If the state gives the green light, more than 10 million surgical gowns would be made by members of the Broadway community to help hospital workers in need. 

“We have people who will work from their house and companies to donate fabric to us,” said owner Bruce Barish. 

Barish says his Bronx business has already found a location that is suited to accommodate the number of gowns that would be needed for the dedicated men and women working around the clock at hospitals and medical centers. 

“We are hoping to help as quick as we can,” said Barish.
