Event aims to strengthen police-community relations
Law enforcement officials hosted an event Tuesday where they unveiled a new program hoping to empower young people through strong relations with law enforcement.
The NYPD Strategic Communications Fellowship Program will arm students with skills in social media, video production, graphic design, photography and speech writing.
Officials also say the multimedia "My Brooklyn Story" contest is expanding to other boroughs as well. The winners - who used various forms of media including video, poetry and essays - told stories of Brooklyn in the past, or demonstrated the strength of their communities or pride in their neighborhoods.
Officials say relations between communities and police should be more than dialing 911 and instead should be about having a one-on-one relationship with the police officers in their precinct.
