Over 100 volunteers in Fairfield celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up the community.

Participants met at 8 a.m. at the Sherman Park gazebo to pick up bags and gloves. Areas that were cleaned included the train station, playgrounds and Gould Manor Park.

"We’re all over the town in a regional collaboration to clean up Fairfield and make it sparkle," said Daphne Dixon of Live Green Connecticut.

Volunteers were encouraged to adopt designated areas or to join existing volunteers.

Organizers estimated that they picked up over 30 pounds of trash all together.

They also say it's important to clean up throughout the year and not just on Earth Day.

Live Green Connecticut is also launching a campaign called "Start on your own Front Yard." It's aimed at getting the entire community involved in cleaning.
