The father of a Brooklyn man shot and killed by police Monday called for better training for officers who respond to reports of emotionally disturbed individuals.
Dwayne Jeune, 32, died Monday in a police-involved shooting after his mother called 911. Relatives describe Jeune as nonviolent but emotionally disturbed.
Police say he ran out and approached the responding officer. The officer shot him with a stun gun, but Jeune continued to advance with a knife, according to authorities.
Police say Jeune knocked Officer Miquel Gonzalez to the ground and straddled him. Gonzalez fired five rounds.
"My son had his problems, but you call upon those you believe will help you, and all they do is kill," Jeune's father said Tuesday.
The father says police had other options at their disposal to subdue his son, and sources say Gonazlez was involved in another police-involved shooting last year.
The man shot in that incident survived and was charged in connection to it.
Community members say police should have better training on how to respond to situations involving emotionally disturbed people.
"That officer has done bad things before," Jeune's father said. "Officers -- there are good men, good women -- but there are bad ones, bad ones that will do bad things over and over again."
